I completely agree w/ Julie Klausner... Girls, grow the fuck up.
Fuck yeah Julie Klausner. Nothing drives me more nuts than people actively stunting themselves. If you have a tumblr, guess what, your life isn’t that bad, stop being a coward and be an adult. It doesn’t mean you can’t own a Gargoyles t shirt and love Harry Potter, but you have to make personal advances - you owe it to your parents and to your future children.
Yes! Death to all baby ladies! GTFU
Hear hear! While watching the Aesop Rock/Kimya Dawson show the other night with my manfriend, Kimya sang a song that basically said, “we are all complicated” and “just because someone doesn’t like the same shit you do, it doesn’t mean you’re better.” It was so much of the bohemian bourgeois bullshit just stripped away, and saying look, being an adult and having true meaning and purpose to your life is a good thing. You don’t have to be a starving artist to be cool. Fuck it, you don’t even have to be cool. I really wish it weren’t a new song so I could find the lyrics, because it really shook me to my core in a way I wasn’t expecting. I wasn’t even a fan of hers. This is sort of tangental to this article, but I think it all applies. Not everything has to be cute and fancy and unique and different for you to be a person worthy of respect. Every site out there that sells cutesy bacon spatulas or cupcake earrings or goddamn owl necklaces is contributing to this. When I was a teenager I used to dress like some Hot Topic 50s wannabe greaser pinup dork, and now I hate burlesque more than just about anything in the world. If you REALLY fucking like something, then like it and pursue it. If you like something because you think you’re supposed to, or it looks cute or whatever, then maybe you should reevaluate that. I’m rambling here, but the point is, at the end of the song, I turned to my boyfriend, held his hand, and said, “I really like being an adult now. I like being committed to you, and doing the things we do together, and taking care of our shit.” It’s weird coming to terms with that, realizing, oh wow, I don’t give a shit anymore. I go to work every day and try to get better at my job and advance my career. I get involved in projects (CO-PRODUCING HOLY FUCK STARTING JULY 5TH BE THERE) and make soup and cookies for my grandpa. I’ve cut back on drinking and just don’t enjoy it as much anymore. I’m no longer curious about drugs. I run 5k about three times a week. I don’t chase other guys or start fights with my boyfriend. I do shit because it feels right to me now.
Anyway.
